Alexander Pope [Alexander Pope]
(1688–1744) an English ↑poet, well known for his humour and intelligence. He is considered the greatest ↑poet of the ↑Augustan Age. He gained his reputation as a major writer by translating Homer’s Iliad (1715–20) and Odyssey (1725–6), but is now better known for his ↑satirical poems such as ↑Rape of the Lock and An Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot (1735) which made fun of the writers and fashionable people of the period.
